Dehydration is a condition where the loss of water in a dog’s body exceeds the amount that the dog is able to take in and can be fatal so we need to know the signs.

When dogs don’t drink enough water or if they lose too much water, they are at risk of becoming dehydrated.

Panting Excessively

Dogs can’t sweat through their skin like we do so they pant to cool down.

Lethargy & Reduced Energy

Lethargic dogs don’t want to eat, drink, go for a walk, or even get out of their bed as they have reduced energy. They will seem less “happy,” not showing interest in their normally favourite activities, games and toys.

Skin Elasticity

Use your thumb and forefinger to pinch a little skin the dogs back. If well hydrated, the skin should spring back when released. If moves back more slowly they are dehydrated.

Dry Nose, Gums & Mouth

Nose, Gums and Mouth may appear dry.
Gently press on the gums until creates a light spot normal colour should come back right away when you remove your finger.
Gums should feel slick and moist.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

More fluids are being lost quickly can further exacerbate the condition.

Sunken Eyes

 Eyes may appear sunken into the skull set deep into the orbit.

Loss of Appetite

Loss of appetite means they eat less, and therefore eliminates the water content they would normally get from their food.
