Lip reading is a skill used by deaf or hard of hearing people understand what is being said. Are you aware of what you can do to help make yourself more lip readable?

Lipreading requires deep concentration as you cant read every word. Some letters are not visible on lips like ‘C’ and ‘G’.

It is important to make yourself more lip readable to help communications so we have put this checklist together.

Obscure Lips

Keep things away from your lips which can obscure visability.

Think hands in front of face, books, newspapers and food.

Face Direct

Face a lip reader direction and keep still to make it a little easier.

Chewing

Chewing food, drinking drinks, chewing gum and smoking all make it difficult to read lips.

Dont Exaggerate Lips

Trying to help by over exaggerating your lip movement actually makes it harder to lip read.

Speak clearly and a little but with normal rhythm and intonation.

Lighting

Try not to shadow your face. No one can read lips in the dark.

Well lit room and light on the the face can make a huge difference.

No need to Shout

Its doesnt help and can distort your lip pattern.

Hard of hearing it can help to slightly raise your voice but speaking clearly is far more important.

Pen and Paper

An alternative medium of communication can be write it down.

Tablets, laptops and phones can also help.

Quiet Place

Find a quiet place and having soft furnishings, carpets to help absorb noise and make it easier.

Distractions

Lipreading requires deep concentration and can make people feel tired so may require frequent breaks.
